Biography 

Alfred Edward Challis was born on 25th July 1899. His parents, Abraham Markham and Josephine Challis, worked as missionaries. Alfred was one of nine children, although three of his siblings had already died by 1911.

In 1911, Alfred was living with his parents and two younger siblings at 80 Compton Avenue, East Ham, and was working as clerk to a wholesale leather merchant.

During the war, Alfred became a Lieutenant for the Machine Gun Corps. He survived the armistice but died on 9th March 1919, in London. Alfred was buried at the City of London Cemetery in Manor Park.
